There are times in life when we feel like we are doing
everything right but still come up empty-handed, just like the
disciples fishing all night and catching nothing. In John 21:1-7,
we hear a beautiful story of perseverance, recognition, and the
overflowing grace of Jesus. Let us reflect together on this
passage and allow its light to guide our hearts today.
"I Am Going Fishing." Simon Peter’s simple statement, "I
am going fishing," seems ordinary, yet it carries deep meaning.
After the Resurrection of Jesus, the disciples were uncertain
about what to do next. Peter's decision to return to fishing
reminds us of how easy it is to go back to our old ways when
faced with uncertainty or the aftermath of significant events.
Thus, Peter’s fishing trip symbolizes our human tendency to seek comfort in what we know,
especially when our faith feels tested. It shows that even the closest followers of Christ can
experience confusion and need to rediscover their purpose. When we feel lost or unsure, we are
invited to keep moving forward — not by relying solely on our old ways, but by staying open
to the new paths Jesus wants to reveal to us. Trust that even in ordinary actions, God can bring
extraordinary encounters.
"Cast the Net Over the Right Side." After a night of failure, Jesus, standing on the shore,
gives a simple instruction: "Cast the net over the right side of the boat." Though they did not yet
recognize him, the disciples obeyed — and a miracle happened. The command to cast the net
differently teaches us that success often requires obedience to Christ’s word, even when we
don’t fully understand. Sometimes, a small change in direction, made with trust in God, leads to
abundant blessings. Thus, when our efforts seem fruitless, it is not always because we are doing
the wrong thing — sometimes we just need to listen more carefully to Jesus and adjust our
course. His guidance always leads to fulfillment, even if it challenges our instincts or habits.
"It Is the Lord." When the miraculous catch happens, John exclaims, "It is the Lord!" The
moment of recognition is filled with joy, awe, and love. Recognizing Jesus' presence in our lives
can often come after acts of faith and obedience. Sometimes, it is in the everyday miracles — a
friendship rekindled, a prayer answered, an unexpected grace — that we suddenly realize
Christ has been with us all along. Let us train our hearts to recognize the Lord’s presence in the
ordinary and the extraordinary. The more we trust, obey, and remain attentive, the more we
will see his hand in our lives, bringing joy, healing, and purpose.
Let us pray. Lord Jesus, help us to listen to your voice even when we feel lost or discouraged.
Teach us to cast our nets where you guide us, trusting in your plan. Open our eyes to recognize
you standing on the shores of our lives, ready to fill us with your grace and joy. May we always
say with love and certainty, “It is the Lord!” Amen.
