The Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, also known as the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows or the Servite Rosary, is a chaplet that consists of a medal of our Lady of Sorrows, a set of three Hail Mary beads, a set of seven Hail Mary beads, and seven Our Father beads for each of the seven Hail Mary beads and for each of the seven sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The seven sorrows are: 1. The Prophecy of Simeon. The Flight into Egypt. 3. The Loss of the Child Jesus. 4. The Meeting of Mary and Jesus on his Way to Calvary. 5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus. 6. The Taking Down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross. 7. The Burial of Jesus.
There are promises attached to the recitation of the Chaplet of Our Lady of Sorrows. According to St. Alphonsus de Liguori in The Glories of Mary, Our Lord made the following promises to those devoted to the Sorrows of his Blessed Mother: 1. Those who before death invoke the Divine Mother in the name of her sorrows will obtain true repentance of all their sins. 2. He will protect all who have this devotion in their tribulations; he will protect them especially at the hour of death. 3. He will impress upon their minds the remembrance of his passion, and they shall be rewarded for it in heaven. 4. He will commit such devout clients to the hands of Mary, with the power to dispose of them in whatever manner she might please and to obtain for them all the graces she might desire.
On her part, the Blessed Virgin Mary made seven promises to those who recite the Chaplet of Our Lady of Sorrows. These are the seven promises Our Lady made, through St. Bridget of Sweden: 1. I will grant peace to their families. 2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries. 3. I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them in their work. 4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not oppose the adorable will of my Divine Son or the sanctification of their souls. 5. I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal enemy and I will protect them at every instant of their lives. 6. I will visibly help them at the moment of their death. They will see the face of their Mother. 7. I have obtained this grace from my divine Son, that those who propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven and my Son and I will be their eternal consolation and joy.
Let us pray. O Mary, most holy Virgin and Queen of Martyrs, would that I could be transported to heaven, there to contemplate the honors bestowed on you by the Blessed Trinity and by all the heavenly court. But since I am still a pilgrim in this valley of tears, accept this praise and prayer of mine. In your Immaculate Heart, transfixed with so many swords of grief, beseech the Almighty God, for the souls of the faithful departed so that they may find eternal rest in the Lord. I beseech you, in the name of Jesus, your Son, that they may be received into the gates of paradise. I offer to you the memory of those sorrows that you endured in this mortal life as an act of compassion to you. May the joys you now enjoy in heaven bring rejoicing to the souls of the faithful departed so that they may be united with you and the heavenly court in the glory of heaven to praise and adore the Most Holy Trinity forever and ever. Amen.
