The Blessed Virgin Mary is at the right hand of her Son as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. This is consistent with the biblical tradition that the mother of the king traditionally sits at the right hand of her son who is the king. For example, when Bathsheba, the mother of King Solomon, went to him to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah, King Solomon’s half brother, King Solomon stood up to meet her, bowed to her, and then sat down on his throne. He then had a throne brought for his mother, and she then sat down at his right hand. (I Kgs. 2:19).
Thus, from the time of King Solomon onwards, the mother of the king, in the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, had the privilege of sitting at the right hand of the king in court. In addition, those who sought favor from the king sometimes did so through the king’s mother. They would ask the mother of the king to intercede for them before the king. This tradition continues today when we ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for us before her Divine Son. The Blessed Virgin Mary, who is the Queen of Heaven and Earth, and who is so compassionate, and who desires our salvation, comes to our aid if we seek her intercession and if our prayer intentions are in accordance with the will of God.
In the court of heaven, the Virgin Mary, as the Mother of Christ the King, sits beside her Son at his right hand. Those who seek favor from him often go to the King’s Mother, who reigns as Queen. All the countless hosts of the heavenly angels, the saints in heaven, and the faithful venerate her as the Queen of Heaven and Earth.
After Mary had been raised body and soul into heaven, her Son, Jesus, placed her on a throne of glory at his right hand, high above all the angels and saints. Jesus promises that those who are victorious will receive from him the right to sit with him on his throne, just as he was victorious and is seated with the Father on the Father’s throne. (Rev. 3:21).
Also, Psalm 45:10 states: “From the ivory palace you are greeted with music. The daughters of kings are among your loved ones. On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir.” The Church interprets this verse as referring to Mary the Queen entering triumphantly into heaven and sitting at the right hand of the Divine Redeemer. And, like her own Son, having overcome death, she has been taken up body and soul to the glory of heaven where, as Queen, she sits at the right hand of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages. (Pius XII, November 1, 1950, Munificentissimus Deus, Dogma Defining the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, nn. 26, 40).
She is worthy to be the Queen of Heaven and Earth because she is the beloved daughter of our heavenly Father, and because she is the true and natural Mother of Jesus, the King of kings, and because she conceived Jesus in her sacred womb by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Queenship of Mary is celebrated on August 22. As Queen of Heaven and Earth, she has on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev. 12:1). Each of the 12 stars represents the 12 stones of the heavenly Jerusalem. (Rev. 21:14, 19-21).
Let us pray. Hail to you, O Virgin Mother, O Queen of Heaven and Earth, O Immaculate Mary, O Mother of the King of kings, and Lord of lords! You are raised higher than all angels and all mortals! Behold you are worthy of honor, because he who is above the Cherubim has come and has taken flesh from you without harming your virginity! May your name be blessed in all times by all the holy angels and the faithful. Amen.
