Behold magi came from the East saying that they have seen the star of Christ, and have come to worship him. (Mt. 2:2). What was there in this star that announced the birth of the Messiah to the magi? Of the many people who apparently saw the star, none but the magi felt any desire to follow it or to
know to whom it pointed.
Consider the promptness with which the magi corresponded with the grace they had received; scarcely had they beheld the star, than they immediately
set out to discover and adore the King whom it announced to them; they exposed themselves to all the inconveniences and dangers of a long and painful journey; counting as nothing their sufferings and fatigues, provided they found the Savior whom they sought.
What frivolous pretexts and excuses do we not make when we are exhorted to pursue the faith and pious devotions and practices through which God wishes to sanctify us! Examine yourself whether you do not harden your heart when you hear the voice of the Lord. Harden not your hearts if you hear his voice. (Psa. 95:8; Heb. 3:15).
Contemplate the Holy Infant in his humble crib for whom the angels descend from heaven to sing his praises; the shepherds came to acknowledge him as the Messiah who has come to save the world; and the magi arrived from the East to offer their tribute of homage and adoration. The power of the Holy Infant attracts hearts to him from far and near. Will yours alone remain indifferent to his love? He has loved us with an everlasting love; he has drawn us to himself with loving kindness. (Jer. 31:3).
If today he sheds on your soul the light of his divine grace, harden not your heart; but listen to that voice of love and clemency which invites you to approach him and to receive from him that bright flame of love which he came to enkindle on earth.
Our fidelity in obeying his voice ought to be perfect and our acts ought to correspond to the graces he has given us! If the magi had neglected to respond to the interior grace which Jesus infused into them, they would never have set out to seek him. Thus, we must seize every moment of grace and respond accordingly to him. Jesus asks for our heart; he desires to break those bonds that keep us from him, and he wishes to lead us out of the region of sin to everlasting life.
Let us pray. O Divine Infant, I come to prostrate myself at the foot of your cradle, to adore yon as my Savior and my God. You came into this land of exile
to partake of my miseries, to soothe my sorrows, and to be the faithful companion of my pilgrimage. Grant that I may draw from you consolation in my sufferings, and the strength which is necessary for me in the numerous dangers with which I am surrounded; give me your grace so that I may correspond with your good graces to me. Amen.
O Jesus, come and live in my soul, in the spirit of your holiness, power, and truth, guide me ever close to you; reign in me for the glory of your most holy
name forever and ever. Amen.
O most Holy Virgin, permit me to join with you in rendering homage to our Divine Savior. Offer to him my prayers and my necessities, and obtain for
me the grace to follow him on earth in order that I may love him with you eternally in heaven. Amen.
