In this beautiful passage from the Gospel of Luke, we witness a profound moment of joy and faith as Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth. This encounter is filled with divine significance and offers us valuable lessons about belief, joy, and the fulfillment of God's promises.
“Mary Set Out and Traveled in Haste”
Mary’s journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth reveals her faith-filled heart and willingness to serve. After the angel Gabriel announced that she would bear the Son of God and that her cousin, Elizabeth, who was thought to be barren, had conceived in her own age and was six months pregnant, Mary traveled to the hill country, eager to share her joy with and assist Elizabeth. How often do you “set out” in haste to fulfill God’s will? Life gives us opportunities to show love and serve others, but do we respond quickly or hold back, letting hesitation or fear keep us from saying yes? Think about a time when you felt called to help someone. Did you respond eagerly, or did you wait for a more “convenient” time? Like Mary, we’re called to act with trust and promptness, knowing that God will bless our efforts. Whether it’s visiting a friend in need, calling a family member, or volunteering, each act of service becomes a journey of faith.
“Blessed Are You Among Women”
When Mary greets Elizabeth, Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaims Mary’s unique role in salvation history: she is the Mother of the Savior. But Elizabeth’s words also remind us that blessings flow from faith. Mary is blessed because she trusted that God’s promise would be fulfilled. Do you believe in God’s promises for your life? Trusting in God often requires surrender —letting go of doubts and trusting that his plan, even if unseen, is for our good. Just as Mary believed, we are invited to trust that God works through every challenge and blessing in our lives. Consider the blessings you’ve received from trusting God. Perhaps a prayer answered, a situation resolved, or peace given in a difficult time. When we believe in God’s faithfulness, we open our hearts to even more blessings.
“The Infant Leaped for Joy”
Elizabeth’s baby, John the Baptist, leaps in her womb at Mary’s greeting. Even before birth, John recognizes the presence of Jesus. This moment is one of pure joy—a response to being in the presence of God. What brings you joy in your faith? Joy isn’t simply happiness; it’s a deep, abiding sense of God’s love and presence, even in life’s struggles. Like John, we’re called to rejoice in Christ’s nearness and share that joy with others. Think of ways to spread joy this week. Perhaps it’s through a kind word, a smile, or sharing the Good News with someone feeling lost. Let your life, like John’s leap, be a testimony to the joy that comes from knowing Christ.
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for the example of Mary, who shows us how to say yes to your plans with faith and love. Help us to act in haste when called to serve, to trust in your promises, and to find joy in your presence. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, so that we may bring your blessings to others. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
