Scripture attests to the existence of guardian angels. For example, after Peter had been released from jail by an angel of the Lord, Peter then came to himself and said “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod.” When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying for his release. Peter knocked at the door of the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door! However, they told her.” “You are out of your mind.” When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” (Acts 11:11-15).- Thus, the community of believers initially thought that it was the guardian angel of St. Peter who was at the door.
Also, Jesus says that “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” (Mt. 18:10). God has commanded our guardian angel to watch over us. Our guardian angel is our best friend for life. God assigns a guardian angel to each person from our mother’s womb. They are pure spirits, spirits of supernatural intelligence and light, great princes of the empyrean heavens, and mighty messengers of the Great King of heaven and earth. If we realize their unconditional love of God and their incredible love for us, their client, we will be profoundly grateful to God and to them. Our guardian angels have a God-given duty to guide and guard us, to assist and defend us, and to accompany and lead us to heaven. We are indebted to the dear and heavenly angel prince of our life. Our guardian angel keeps untiring watch over us and over everything that concerns us. They are ever in the presence of God and, at the same time, in our presence. When we are sinning, they turn their face to God and beseech him to have mercy on us.
Our guardian angel is chosen for us by God himself. Our guardian angel is keenly interested in our temporal welfare and eternal salvation because it is the primary office assigned to him by God. The saints assist us out of charity; our guardian angel, however, assists out of duty and obedience to God. The saints have many clients; however, our guardian angel has but one—you whom God has entrusted to him to have charge over you. Through their intercession for us, God bestows on us blessings that we would not have otherwise received were it not for the intercession and prayers of our guardian angel for us.
Let us pray. O holy Angel of God, appointed by him to be my guardian, I give you thanks for all the benefits that you have ever bestowed on me in body and in soul. I praise and glorify you that you condescend to assist me with patient fidelity and to defend me against all the assaults of my enemies. Blessed be the hour in which you were assigned to me to be my guardian, my defender, and my patron. In acknowledgment of and in return for all your loving ministries to me up until now, I offer to the Eternal Father the infinitely precious and noble Heart of Jesus. I firmly purpose henceforth to obey you and faithfully serve our God and Creator. Amen.
