In Luke 15:1-3, 11-32, Jesus shares the parable of the prodigal son in response to the Pharisees and scribes who criticized him for welcoming sinners. This powerful story of a father’s mercy and love reveals God’s heart for his children—both those who stray and those who remain faithful. It is a reminder that no matter how far we wander, God is always ready to welcome us home.
“This son of mine was dead, and has come to life again.” Imagine the heartbreak of a parent watching their child drift away—making choices that lead to self-destruction. The parable of the prodigal son captures this pain, but it also reveals a love that never fades. When the prodigal son left home, he didn’t just lose his wealth; he lost himself. His reckless decisions left him empty, broken, and spiritually dead.
But grace is always at work. Even in the darkest moments, God’s love is calling us back. The young man, realizing his mistakes, took the first step to return home. Sin may separate us from God, but repentance brings us back to life. No matter how far we have strayed, our Heavenly Father is always ready to restore us. Never believe that your failures define you. In Christ, there is always a second chance, a fresh start, a new life waiting for you.
“He was lost, and has been found.” The prodigal son was lost in pride, in selfishness, in the illusion of independence. But when he returned home, he wasn’t just given food and shelter; he was restored as a beloved son. His father didn’t shame him or lecture him; he embraced him with joy. How often do we feel lost—disconnected from God, unsure of our purpose? The good news is that God never stops searching for us. Like the shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one lost sheep, our Heavenly Father rejoices when we turn back to him. No matter how lost you feel, God knows exactly where you are. His love is not conditional on your past but on his unchanging mercy. All you need to do is take that first step toward him.
A Celebration of Home Coming. The father in the parable did something unexpected —he threw a feast. Why? Because every soul that returns to God is worth celebrating! The same is true today. When we turn back to the Lord, Heaven rejoices. God’s love is extravagant, boundless, and full of joy. Maybe you have been distant from God, or perhaps you know someone who has walked away. Don’t lose hope. Keep praying, keep believing. The Father’s arms are always open.
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for never giving up on us. Even when we wander, your love calls us home. Help us to trust in your mercy, to rise from our failures, and to embrace the new life that you offer. Fill our hearts with joy, knowing that we are never too lost to be found by you. May we extend the same love and grace to those around us, becoming beacons of hope and forgiveness. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
